Using a Standing Keyboard Tray

If you’re interested in incorporating some posture change throughout the workday, but aren’t ready to make the commitment to a full height adjustable desk, you can start with trying a standing keyboard tray. This will allow you to raise your keyboard higher than the desk level, keeping you in a healthy, ergonomic position as you stand and type.

Keyboard trays consist of three main parts: a track that attaches to the underside of your desk, a mechanism that provides adjustment, and platforms for your keyboard and mouse. Most keyboard trays use a mechanism with limited above-desk adjustment, because they’re designed for use while seated.

A standing keyboard tray includes a much longer mechanism, allowing for significantly more adjustment. This means you can raise it several inches to bring your typing surface well above the desk. Of course, it works well for the times you’re seated as well, as the mechanism can be adjusted below the desk, bringing your keyboard closer to your lap.

Our KT2 Adjustable Height Standing Keyboard Tray provides a full 8” of height adjustment above the desk and 10” below, so you can easily alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. The keyboard and mouse platform swivel left and right to accommodate position shift throughout the day, and can be tilted downward for a healthy angle that promotes wrist comfort and health. The mouse platform can be attached to the left or right side of the platform.

It’s important to keep in mind that you’ll also need to raise the level of your monitor when you stand, to avoid the neck and back pain that comes with looking downward at your screen. An excellent option is our LIFT Adjustable Height Monitor Stand , which has a maximum height setting of 13” above the desk, and is strong enough to support monitors up to 30 pounds.
