What’s the distance from your elbows to your eyes?
Is that measurement the same as the guy next to you or your 10 closest coworkers?
Probably not. So why do so many standing desks “fix” this distance?
We really aren’t sure.
Product design isn’t easy nor is it eternal (very few products survive unchanged for a couple years let alone a decade). Uncaged Ergonomics is far from perfect when it comes to product design. With that being said, the main design feature that we required in our standing desk conversions – like LIFT Standing Deskand the WorkEZ Standing Desk – was the ability to adjust the position of the keyboard independently of the monitor. We felt this was an important feature for a couple reasons.
- From a comfort perspective, not everyone has the same physique so being able to adjust the distance between the keyboard and monitor would help our standing desk conversions appeal to and comfortably fit a wider population.
- From a proper posture perspective, posture experts tend to agree that we should be typing with our elbows bent a little more than 90-degrees, wrists neutral or drooping down, and monitors positioned at about eye-level. Understanding these reports indicated the ability to separately adjust the position of keyboards and monitors would allow our standing desks to ergonomically fit a wider range of people.
If you’re in the market to purchase a standing desk or a standing desk conversion kit, we encourage you to look for a product that allows you to adjust your monitor’s position independently of your keyboard’s position. Using a workspace that’s customizable to your physique is the ideal way to improve your posture over both the short- and long-term.
